Yamato Arts Aikido Top Picture

The Yamato Arts Aikido group is based in Largo, Florida. We meet weekly to practice the art of Daito-ryu Aiki-Jujutsu Takuma-kai. Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu is a samurai art which focuses on neutralizing an opponent that is attacking with a sword, knife, or fist. As it is primarily a defensive art, we do not teach punches and kicks as the means to defense. Footwork, balance, wrist & arm locks, and creative leveraging are used to defeat the opponent. When done properly, a person of small stature should be able to protect himself against a larger opponent who outweighs him. It is a soft art that is appropriate for women and children as well.

The class instructor, David Walter, has been practicing Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu for over 15 years. Walter Sensei regularly travels to Japan to update his skills and he brings that knowledge back to his students to share.

The class meets on Wednesday nights at the Orange Lake Civic Center from 7 to 8:30 PM. The Civic Center is at 11803 104 St. N. Largo, FL 33773. This is several blocks south of the Largo Mall, off of Seminole. The Civic Center itself is nestled within the houses of the local subdivision, so you may need to drive around a bit to find it.

Before coming to practice, all prospective students are requested to meet with the instructor first to discuss their goals in learning and to determine whether they will be a good match for the club. In order for all students to have a fair chance at learning the art, the harmony of the club is strictly guarded.

Monthly dues are $45 and students are required to sign a form to autodebit from their credit or debit card. There are no contracts and the student can have the autodebit terminated whenever he/she decided to stop practicing.
